If you had to place 10 children with Autism in one room, each child will be completely different. They will all have varying levels of communication, different types of behaviour, a range of social skills and intellectual ability. So how does one define it?

There are many different definitions researchers and professionals have come up with over the years to define Autism. One could say that Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by deficits in social skills as well as repetitive behaviours. Naturally, this definition is extremely narrow in terms of pinpointing Autism but it is just to give you an overarching idea of what Autism entails.

Research has proven that Autism occurs 4 times more likely in boys than girls. There is no scientific reason known as to why this is the case however, recently the National Institute of Health scientists found that a single amino acid change in the NLGN4 gene, which has been linked to autism symptoms could drive this occurrence.

Some early signs to look out for:

Social communication

  • Poor or limited eye contact
  • Inability to make friends
  • Delay in verbal and non verbal communication
  • Loss of previously acquired speech
  • Difficulty understanding other peoples emotions

Behavioural

  • Restricted repetitive behaviour
  • Aversive to change
  • Unexpected reaction to sounds/ tastes/ smells
  • Extreme interest in specific topics
  • Staring at lights/ spinning objects
  • Lining objects or toys up (Ritualistic behaviour)
